Ōkuri marae is located on Mangahauini Valley Road (State Highway 35), north of Tolaga Bay. Its principal hapū are Ngāti Ira and Ngāti Kahukuranui with connections to both Te Aitanga ā Hauiti and Ngāti Porou iwi.
The wharenui is also called Ōkuri. The marae connects ancestrally to the four waka Horouta, Nukutaimemeha, Takitimu and Tereanini, the maunga Pākaurangi, and the awa Hikuwai.
