Matawaia Marae is situated in the area known as Matawaia roughly 40 km inland from Moerewa, south of Kaikohe in Northland. Its main association is with Ngāti Hine.
The wharenui is named Rangimarie, which originally faced eastward toward the wharekai, Miria. Also featured on site are kaumatua flats and a kohanga reo. Matawaia Marae connects ancestrally to the maunga Hikurangi.
