Mataitaua marae is located in Hōreke in the Hokianga, off Rangiahua Road. It represents the Ngāti Toro hapu of Ngāpuhi, who are descended from the waka named Ngātokimatawhaorua, and its navigational leader, Nukutawhiti.  The wharenui is called Ngāti Toro. Mataitaua marae is also linked to the maunga named Whakarongorua, to the Utakura River and to the Hokianga Harbour (Te Hokianga nui a Kupe).
