Te Puea Memorial Marae was built to honour the late Princess Te Puea Herangi, who along with King Koroki supported its construction in the mid-twentieth century. The Maori Freehold and Lands Act allocated a Maori Reservation for the purpose of a marae, where Te Puea Memorial is situated.
The marae is located on the southeastern side of Māngere Bridge near the shores of the Manukau Harbour. Te Puea Memorial Marae is the northernmost marae of the Waikato-Tainui confederation. The marae links ancestrally to the Tainui waka.
The wharenui is Te Puea and the wharekai is Nga Tama Wahine. It is defined by the maunga Te Arapuru Kiekie and the moana Te Manuka o Hoturoa (Manukau Harbour).
