Ōwhakatoro marae (also known as Te Mauku) is located 10 km west of Rūātoki. The primary hapū is Ngāti Rongo of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The whare tipuna is named Ta Apirana Turupa Ngata. Ōwhakatoro marae connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the maunga Taiarahia and the awa Ōhinemataroa.
