Te Ōhākī marae is located 6 km north of Huntly on the western banks of the Waikato River. The principal hapū that affiliate with this marae include Ngāti Kuiaarangi, Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Tai and Ngāti Whaawhaakia of the wider iwi collective Waikato-Tainui.
The wharenui is named Te Ōhākī a Te Puea, in honour of the recent ancestor Te Puea. The marae ancestrally links to the Tainui waka, the maunga Taupiri and the awa Waikato.
