Te Pākira marae is located in the geothermal village of Whakarewarewa, Rotorua. The two primary iwi of this marae are Ngāti Wāhiao and Tūhourangi, the latter comprised of the hapū Ngāti Taoi and Ngāti Uruhina.

Tūhourangi came to live beside their Ngāti Wāhiao relations after the 1886 Tarawera eruption, which destroyed their Tarawera homes and killed over 150 of their people. They also resettled at nearby Ngāpuna (Apumoana/Moerangi Marae) and down at Waitangi near Te Puke.
