Puketāwai

Puketāwai Marae is situated approximately 8 km north-east of Uawa (Tolaga Bay). Its name derives from the eponymous ancestor Te Amowhiu (the first), mother of Te Rangipureora, whose name the people of this area identify with by calling themselves Te Whanau o Te Rangipureora. Ngāti Kuranui is the other hapu associated with the area. The name Puketawai originates from the tawai tree, which in former times grew profusely on the hills surrounding the Papakāinga.

The name of the whare is Te Amowhiu. Puketāwai connects to the maunga O-manu-huruhuru and the awa Waikirikiri.
