Mōkau Kohunui marae is located in Piopio, 23 km south-west of Te Kuiti. The principal hapū associated with Mōkau Kohunui are Ngati Waiora, Paemate and Kinohaku.
The wharenui is named Tama Tāne and the wharekai is Te Aroha. The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the maunga Kahuwera, Herangi and Aorangi, the awa Moka and the tribal collective of Ngāti Maniapoto.
