Mōkai

Mōkai marae is located just off Tirohanga Road, in Mōkai, about 27 km northwest of Taupō. Its principal hapū are Ngāti Hā, Ngāti Moekino, Ngāti Parekaawa, Ngāti Tarakaiahi, Ngāti Te Kohera and Ngāti Wairangi of the iwi Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

The wharenui is called Pakake Taiari, after an ancestral chief, and the wharekai is named Parehingaawatea after his wife. The marae connects ancestrally to the Te Arawa and Tainui waka, the maunga Tongariro and the awa Waikato.

On 15 August 2015 a fire destroyed the wharekai, Parehingaawatea. Efforts are currently underway to rebuild the wharekai.
