Kariaka marae (Ngāti Porou) is located immediately southwest of Ruatōria township on Waiapu Road. Its principal hapū are Ngāi Tangihaere and Te Whānau a Hinekehu of Ngāti Porou iwi.

The wharenui is Ngati Porou and the Wharekai is Hinekehu. The marae connects to Horouta waka, the maunga Hikurangi and the awa Mangakino-iti.
