Ōmarumutu is located on the eastern boundaries of Whakatōhea at Ōmarumutu. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Ruatākenga (also known as Ngāti Rua) of Whakatōhea iwi.
The wharenui is called Tūtāmure and the wharekai is Hine-i-Kauia. The marae connects ancestrally to Mātaatua and Nukutere waka, the maunga Mākeo and the awa Waiaua. It is home to one of Whakatōhea's prominent tipuna, Tutāmure.
