Te Tai Tokerau
Matauri marae, also known as Te Tāpui, is centrally located in the cliff-top papakainga overlooking the sweeping beach and pa of Mātauri Bay. The wharenui is named Ngā Puhi. Its wharekai (Te Puawaitanga) used to house the kohanga reo that was established in the 1980s.
Next to the marae is the now closed 1990s Kura Kaupapa Maori o Whangaroa. Associated hapu are Ngāti Kura, Ngāi Tupango, Ngāti Torehina and Ngāti Ruamahue of Ngāpuhi. Mātauri marae also connects to the maunga named Whakarara and to the Kopuakawau River.
