Maketū

Maketū marae is located on the northern shores of the Kawhia Harbour, in Kawhia township. The hapū is Ngāti Mahuta ki te Hauāuru. The whare tipuna is named Auau ki te Rangi in honour of Hoturoa, and was opened in 1962. Auau ki te Rangi was the father of Hoturoa (the navigator of the Tainui waka), who is said to have been buried on the small puke behind the marae (known as Te Ahurei) when the waka landed at Maketu.

The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the moana Kawhia and the maunga Pirongia.
