Ruato marae is also known as Ngā Pūmanawa e Waru o Te Arawa, and is located on the southern shores of Lake Rotoiti east of Lake Rotorua just at the turn off to Lake Okataina. The primary hapū is Ngati Tukiterangi of the iwi Ngāti Rongomai.
The whare tupuna is named Ngā Pūmanawa e Waru o Te Arawa. Ruato marae connects ancestrally to Te Arawa waka and the maunga Matawhaura.
