Waikōhatu marae is located on the southern shores of Lake Rotoiti at Ruato Bay, just at the turn off to Lake Okataina. The primary hapū is Ngāti Te Rangitakaroro of the iwi Ngāti Tarāwhai.
The whare tupuna is named Tarāwhai and the marae connects ancestrally to Te Arawa waka and the maunga Makatiti.
