Pounamunui Marae also known as Ōtaramarae Marae, over looks the beautiful lake ‘Te Rotoiti-kite-a-Īhenga’ or lake Rotoiti. Our tupuna whare ’Houmaitawhiti’ originally stood at Maketū pā in the 1800’s along side of Kawatapuarangi, Te Awhe-o-Te Rangi and several others. Around the early 1900’s Houmaitawhiti was transported to Pounamunui/Ōtaramarae via horse and wagon and opened again in 1912. In 1968 our tupuna was moved slightly, raised, upgraded and re-opened in 1970.  Our marae is open for bookings and our Kuia ‘Hinekukutirangi’ or wharekai can seat 240 pax comfortably and can sleep 50 in the tupuna whare and another 10 pax in the mattress room if need be. Pounamunui Marae is 25 kilometres from Rotorua city, around 28 minutes travel from the city depending on traffic. The main hapū for Pounamunui marae is Ngāti Hinekura of Ngāti Pikiao. Nau mai, haere mai!
