Matetera Marae is located in the settlement of Waimā below the pou whenua maunga of Whakatere. Located in the South Hokianga, Te Tai Tokerau, just off State Highway 12.
It is associated with the independent local iwi known as Te Māhurehure and affiliated to hapū Ngāti Hurihanga and Ngāti Tarahape.
